Nick Weller’s stunning finish earns Box Hill United a point in 1-1 draw
At Larisa Reserve, the excitement was palpable as Box Hill United FC travelled to St Albans in preparation for their first game away from home in 2024 against the North Sunshine Eagles.
The game began with a flurry of action, as Pythagoras started on top fuelling the pressure for the Eagles early on, leaving the crowd at the edge of their seats.
Pythagoras maintained control with Anthony Rizk, a new signing, orchestrating great passes out wide.
Midway through the first half, the team had a near miss after a lovely cross pass from Nikita Varelas. Head Coach Tony Merakis expressed his words of encouragement, urging the team on.
Nick Weller had shown throughout the game that he came to win. He made some brilliant plays, dribbling past defenders and setting up his teammates for shots. He also made some crucial tackles that prevented the Eagles from scoring.
The first half ended scoreless, but Pythagoras held firm with an upper hand on the attack and a positive outlook while pushing for the lead. After the break, the pressure from Eagles had finally set in, but Box Hill maintained their composure, setting an ironclad defence in second half. The team kept pushing for the win, with the players’ camaraderie on show.
The energy had reached fever pitch as we edged closer to full time. Ndue Mujeci of North Sunshine scored to give the hosts the lead, but Pythagoras showed grit.
With a minute till stoppage time, Luke Pickett received a red card and saw Box Hill down to 10 men.
This did not hinder Box Hill, as Varelas stepping up for a last-gasp free-kick. Weller delivered under pressure with a bicycle kick sending the Pythagoras bench into raptures.
Box Hill spectators who travelled erupted in cheers with everyone over the moon as they equalised. Weller was the hero of the night with his endeavour and skills throughout causing stellar celebrations for the hard-fought draw.
We saw the wholesome team spirit through a gripping game where the men showed great resilience in the face of adversity. As the team headed back to the locker room, there was relief all round. With players like Weller leading the charge, it is exciting to see what the future hold for Box Hill United, making it a valuable opening two matches to open the season.
