VPL 2 Men Match Report: Late goal for Altona City splits the difference
A solitary goal has given Altona City a 1-0 win over Box Hill United on Friday night.
A blustery night greeted the players at McIvor Reserve as tricky conditions looked to play their part.
As Pythagoras began on their terms with most of the possession, it opened up through Luka Barrueto who held the ball up well leading the line.
Altona City eventually worked their way into the game, prompting Luke Del Vecchio to pull off a couple of key stops to prevent the hosts from going ahead.
The wind would not relent for the second half, sustaining a cagey encounter that relied on accuracy from free kicks.
Both Altona City and Box Hill United created chances but none seemed to come off despite the endeavours.
It was a match that needed a moment of magic, where unfortunately for Pythagoras it was not in their favour.
Just before stoppage time, Del Vecchio brilliantly saved a free kick, but the rebound was parried in the path of Lachlan Smith to score the rebound.
5 minutes of stoppage time ensued to grab something from the game, but it was not enough as Altona City sealed a 1-0 victory.
A bitter pill to swallow for Pythagoras, who will look to put this behind them when they host Boroondara Eagles at Wembley Park on July 5.
