Luke Del Vecchio: “The resilience in the group has been there all year”

Senior Men’s goalkeeper Luke Del Vecchio stood up when it counted to contribute to Box Hill United’s 2-0 win over Boroondara Eagles.

An immense display full of saves and interventions earned a clean sheet after strong performances preceded the victory.

Del Vecchio credited the squad’s character despite facing some setbacks.

“We definitely wanted that win and pick up the three points,” he said.

“Once we got the first one early, they definitely came at us quite strong, especially towards the end of the opening half.

“The boys were really resilient which was most important and we stuck through it by dealing with a lot of long balls and set pieces.

“It was nice to get the win.”

Playing a major role in the clean sheet, Del Vecchio himself was in the firing line with a nasty collision but soon recovered after putting his body on the line.

His courage set the tone as it fed to the rest of the group.

“The clean sheet is really important for us, we showed a lot of guts and determination,” he said.

“The resilience in the group has been there all year, it’s just been moments we’ve been a bit unlucky.

“It’s a great squad and we thoroughly deserved the victory.”

Looking ahead, the Senior Men’s squad have a clear focus of continuously improving with a positive culture.

“We’ve been a tight group all year, from pre-season till now,” he said.

“It’s a shame the results haven’t quite reflected where we truly are with a few draws, but despite that we’ve been a united group and emphasised that in a huddle after the match.”
