Tony Merakis on the Dockerty Cup: “The last 10 minutes really showed who we are”

Box Hill United’s Senior Men’s team are ready and recharged to go again in the league when they face Brunswick Juventus.

The Dockerty Cup Round 4 tie between Box Hill United and Caroline Springs George Cross at Wembley Park saw Pythagoras exit the competition – however, despite the disappointing outcome, the match showcased numerous high-quality goals, leaving Tony Merakis and the fans optimistic about the future.

Reflecting on the match, Merakis emphasised the team’s missed opportunities and the unpredictable nature of football.

“Caroline Springs indeed had a very good set-piece regime which got us a few times, so there’s work to do there,” Merakis commented.

However, amidst the disappointment, there were moments of brilliance, particularly towards the end of the match.

“It was a fantastic comeback effort near the end, I think the last 10 minutes really showed who we are.”

“We could’ve played that style of football for more of the game and maybe got a different result.”

Throughout the 2024 season, Merakis has remained confident in both the matches and the players.

“We’ve got some injuries that we’re getting back to really get the depth and experience in our squad – I think you’ll see a really good turnaround in that,” Merakis added with satisfaction.

“But our current squad is also performing quite well – it’s moving forward in the right direction.”

It’s because of the 100% trust in the players that they can perform at such a high level in matches.

Pythagoras face another testing encounter with Brunswick Juventus on Friday night. For Merakis and the players, this will also be another high-level showdown.

“We’ve faced top-quality sides so far, and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” he stated.

“The team has risen to the challenge on many occasions.

“The match got away from us but we still take many positives away.

“I’m sure they’ll definitely respond.”

Looking ahead to future matches, Box Hill United FC still believes in its ability to deliver exciting performances for their loyal supporters.
