VPL 2 Men Match Report: Box Hill United clinches 2-0 win over Beaumaris in passionate encounter

Box Hill United’s Senior Men have recorded a 2-0 win over Beaumaris SC away at Beaumaris Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Right at the mid-point of the league season, it set the scene for a pulsating contest as there was plenty on the line for both teams, with a similar fate of unlucky one-goal losses that could have turned into more.

With the disappointment of derby defeat put behind them, it was Box Hill United who emerged as the team ready to be on the front foot.

Ryo Okamoto battles for possession.

Right from the kick off, they showed intent to make forays into the Beaumaris defence which worked superbly.

A pinpoint switch pass from Alexander Tektonopoulos from the right of midfield was perfectly placed for Ruben Sanchez Marcano, who had no hesitation in the finish to open the scoring. The Spaniard now leads the way in Pythagoras’ goal scoring charts, with three in total.

As momentum was in Box Hill United’s favour, this was capitalised to a tee as Anthony Rizk bobbed down the left to float a cross into the box, which was met by Fintan Geoghegan’s header – who made his first senior start after coming off the bench against Nunawading City last week.

With a 2-0 lead for Pythagoras, Beaumaris started to work their way into the match and a key moment looked to potentially unsettle Pythagoras.

Tektonopoulos supplied the assist for Sanchez Marcano.

Rizk was shown a straight red card for a late tackle, as Box Hill United were reduced to 10 men.

As adjustments were made before half time, the focus shifted for the second half to solidify the defence.

Beaumaris started to pose some problems, but the reliable goalkeeping of Luke Del Vecchio was strong when called upon, particularly as he tipped a big chance over the bar.

The home side continued to pepper Box Hill United’s half, but found no way through and it was Pythagoras who then flicked the switch and closed out the game in familiar nature to the opening 10 minutes.

Rizk delivered the cross for Geoghegan’s header.

Sanchez Marcano and Nikita Varelas provided the late spark for Pythagoras, while Daniel Brooks was sent off for Beaumaris to leave the hosts down to 10 men, just before stoppage time.

2-0 was the eventual final score, in a Round 11 contest that was hard fought right till the end.
