NPL Women Match Report: Thrilling first half sets up victory for Box Hill United
Box Hill United secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Calder United in a thrilling encounter at Wembley Park on Saturday afternoon.
The stadium was buzzing with the electrifying energy of supporters from both sides, as their cheers and encouragement resonated throughout the match. This win marks Box Hill’s second home victory in three matches, and marks a four-match undefeated streak.
The match kicked off with both teams demonstrating attacking intent, but it was Box Hill who struck first. In a well-executed play, Rhianna Pollicina manoeuvred past Natalie Picak in the Calder goal and slotted the ball into an empty net, giving Pythagoras an early advantage.
Box Hill dominated the early stages, creating several chances while keeping their defence impenetrable. Nikolina Bucalo was a standout, showcasing her exceptional ball control and setting up opportunities for her teammates with ease as she glided past Calder United’s defenders.
Minutes before halftime, Box Hill doubled their lead. Pollicina, in top form, received a precise cross from Elwen Parbery and tucked away a calm first-time shot inside the box, finding the back of the net for her second goal of the match. This clinical finish put Box Hill firmly in control.
However, just seconds into first-half stoppage time, Calder United managed to break through and score through Akeisha Sandhu, narrowing the deficit and raising the tension in the stadium. Despite this, Box Hill’s resolve remained unshaken.
The second half saw both teams fighting hard, with each side creating opportunities but finding it difficult to break down the opposing defences. Box Hill continued to dominate possession, generating numerous scoring chances.
Calder United, determined to find an equaliser, pushed forward with increased intensity. However, the Pythagoras defence, anchored by the exceptional performance of goalkeeper Natasha Stathopoulos, held firm. Stathopoulos made several crucial saves, ensuring Calder’s efforts were thwarted.
As the match progressed, the tension grew. Box Hill made a strategic double substitution, bringing on Olivia Johnston and captain Olivia Ellis for Pollicina and Sofia Sakalis, to maintain their tactical discipline and composure.
In the last few minutes of the match, Calder United had one final chance to equalise. A close kick narrowly missed the target, much to the relief of the Box Hill supporters. The referee’s final whistle soon followed, confirming a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Box Hill United.
This well-earned victory at Wembley park marks a significant achievement for Box Hill United, boosting the team’s confidence for the upcoming fixtures. It reflects the squad’s resilience, tactical prowess, and determination to succeed, setting a positive stage for future challenges.
Box Hill United extends heartfelt thanks to the supporters for their unwavering encouragement and looks forward to continuing this momentum in the next match. The team is eager to build on this success and tackle the challenges ahead with renewed vigour and confidence.
