Box Hill United tested in FV Emerging’s 3-1 win
FV Emerging defeated Box Hill United 3-1 at The Home of the Matildas on Saturday afternoon, with plenty still to like from Pythagoras despite what the scoreline suggests.
In a match overall that had its fair share of ebbs and flows, it was FV Emerging who sought the fast start.
Natasha Stathopoulos, a key contributor to Box Hill United’s four-match unbeaten run leading into the match, made a couple of fine saves early in the piece to halt FV Emerging in their tracks.
However, the floodgates began to open as FV Emerging scored twice inside half an hour, with the latter an unlucky one for Zoë Hudson who tried desperately to keep a rolling ball out of the net.
Despite the early setbacks, a determined Box Hill United would not drop their intensity.
That tenacity was rewarded when Sofia Sakalis got one back from a tap in, following up on an initial save. The chain of events thereafter saw chances at both ends as the 2-1 score was kept intact.
With momentum on their side from the end of the first half, Pythagoras continued this on in the second.
Two genuine penalty shouts, a FV Emerging clearance off the line and a big chance for Olivia Johnston all under an hour played their part in chasing the equaliser.
Against the run of play however, FV Emerging received a penalty and was converted by Caitlin Karic to extend their lead to 3-1.
Pythagoras were diligent all day in sticking with the task, despite the frustrations on the day with 50/50 calls.
The Senior Women will be on their travels again next week, looking to regroup for a Round 12 clash with Brunswick Juventus at CB Smith Reserve.
