VPL 2 Men Match Report: Box Hill United pipped by Brunswick Juventus 1-0

A solitary goal proved the difference as Brunswick Juventus defeated Box Hill United 1-0 at CB Smith Reserve on Friday night.

Coming into the match, it was expected to be another tough encounter against Brunswick Juventus, but Pythagoras held firm and particularly held possession well and they push the hosts deeper into a low block.

However, first-half opportunities were limited, as Michael Romas let fly from range to muster the first shot, while Anthony Rizk and Agustin Casco were involved in free kicks and crossing chances respectively.

On the half hour mark, Nikita Varelas sustained the team’s momentum as Box Hill were getting on top of the penalty area touches, as his attempt agonisingly brushed past the post.

The endeavour was also met at the other end of the pitch, as Ryo Okamoto put his body on the line with a couple of key defensive efforts.

However, the deadlock was broken just before half time, as Thomas Barforosh got around Luke Del Vecchio to score into an empty net and put the home side 1-0 up.

The second half saw Ruben Sanchez Marcano come off the bench, having previously recovered from injury to make his Box Hill United debut. Deployed in an attacking midfield role, we saw his ambition displayed with key forward passes.

Box Hill United did well to thwart Brunswick shots, with Luke Del Vecchio pulling off a spectacular low save to keep Pythagoras in the contest.

We continued our raids down the wing which turned into crossing opportunities, but unfortunately couldn’t quite hit the right player in the box to take a shot on.

It led to Box Hill United suffering a narrow defeat, but can take heart from not being comprehensively beaten.

Pythagoras return home next Friday night at Wembley Park to turn the tide against Altona City SC.
